Aftermarket Audio Steering Wheel Interface

Several people have mentioned that they have given up the steering wheel function so that they can have a better head unit.
I was just talking to an car audio specialist and he showed me this little interface unit by Peripheral. I can't remember the name of it but it was something like "pismix" or "pasmix".

He said it will interface most Alpine headunits and several other good brandname headunits with the steering wheel functions. He said it is imported from the U.S. so I would assume some of you guys in the U.S. would have heard of it.

Costs about AUD250 installation $120. Its about 10cm x 5-8cm.

Has anyone heard of it and will it do what it says? I am assuming maybe not because, as far as I can recall, no one has mentioned it here.

Except for the 99 S-class, they have nothing for any MB newer than 1998.

Is the converter will be compatible with Mercedes? The application guide doesn't list Mercedes vehicle.

Jet,

That's great news if you've got a Honda, Acrua, Toyota, Ford, GM, or Chevrolet. It's not going to work with a modern Mercedes though.

Yeah, after reading the guide for that thing on the web, it obviously excludes MB. I guess that audio guy was trying to get my MB in the workshop before I knew what was going on!!

So lets say you upgraded your headunit with an Alpine and everything else. This unit is suppose to still be able to let you use the controls on your MB steering wheels???

That is correct. Since in 99+ MB went to the D2B Fiber system controlled by the CANBUS.

The steering wheel controls which control the radio and the instrument cluster display are all networked by CANbus (along with other high-level engine system stuff such as fuel level, engine temp, etc). The radio is on both the CANbus and also the D2B Optical bus (which connects it with the CD changer and optional Bose stuff). To get steering wheel controls with an aftermarket head unit, you would really only need something that interfaces to the CANbus and looks like a Mercedes radio to the CANbus and looks like some kind of controller to the aftermarket radio.

Of course, no one has built such a device since it would require months of developer time (costing thousands of dollars) and would be a product you could only sell to a very limited market. How much would you pay for such an interface? $1000? You would need at least 10 other people willing to pay $1000 to justify the development expenses.

Suppose you get a few wealthy Mercedes owners together and decide to hire a young recent electrical engineering university graduate willing to work for next to nothing with the goal of trying to develop this device. Perhaps then, you could build something that would work. However, you might also end up spending a bunch of money and getting nowhere.

Cryptnotic, exacltly the same is true of the "CANbus interface" that is available so that you can put COMAND in cars without CAN. It looks like the car to the COMAND, and has discrete inputs for lights, speed and reverse signal .. I suspect the aftermarket for a steering wheel control thing (at least to a set of discrete relays that you could then connect to a purchased remote control)(or with a built in learning r.c) would have a larger market audience.

So maybee there is hope ..

What about Blau headunits that have the thummer remote control? That would snuggle in nicely to the interior of the steering wheel.

Still don't understand why it's such a big deal to move your right hand 4", but the Blau might be a happy medium for those that need to have remote control.
