I have had good results with these Infinity Basslink 10" subs. They are tunable, and there is an amp available that can boost power to all four channels in your car now. These units are better because an engineer designed the speaker and passive radiator to complement each other, and the amp is a class D type, which is desirable in audio systems.

http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.aspx?ProdId='BASSLINK+II'&Ser=BSL&Cat=PSU

The Bose system was a poor choice because it is designed to work well in the passenger cavity of the S class. The enclosure, the speaker, and the amp are all tweaked to yield a pleasing result. Moving car audio to a new place is usually a disaster for Bose equipment.

Be warned about your ears, people who have this sub in their car now say "huh" a lot of the time. (just kidding)

A well tuned sub, should be felt rather than heard, thus reducing the chance of the 'huh' effect

The amp is a rack that plugs into the Basslink II.

If you were not pleased with the sound of the Basslink II, the other products in the series might not be to your liking. The T version is a repackaged version to allow use in small spaces like behind pick-up seats.

Moviela - I'm kinda interested in the Basslink or Basslink II. Did you install it yourself or some shop? Would it intergrate well with factory H/K system? I have an E500 that I would like this sub mount in the trunk, but not sure how/where to bolt it down. Thanks!!

I do my own audio work. These units mount easy, I prefer horizontal mounting as far forward in the trunk as posible. They will work with all modern audio head units. It needs a large power wire, which is the hardest part of the install.

ANy clue on the 11 speaker (I think) HK in a 2005 C55?

Check out the JL Audio 10w7 subs and their amps. JL has some of the best sounding and best quality products.

I just had a JL Audio infinite-baffle M101B5-4 marine sub installed in the rear deck of my 2005 E500 where the HK sub normally sits. Also installed a JL 250/1 amp with a Periphreal interface to the factory speaker output from the 'radio'. I tried the Infinity Basslink and the Alpine setups. Not even close to what the JL sub does. It hits and it hits hard. Dynamat was needed to keep the rear deck from vibrating as this setup really pounded the thing.

Couple things I don't like... the sub is white, which I fixed by making a cover for it.
It hangs down into the trunk area unlike the factory HK sub. This takes up MUCH less space than any of the box type subs (Basslink, LAT5, LAT7.. custom box..) but you can see it sort of.
I'll snap some pics when I get a chance.

Damn.. forgot all about that.
It's raining right now, but when it stops I'll go take some.
Really not alot to see.. just the JL sub mounted (with a custom adpater) where the HK sub is supposed to sit and I got the JL amp on the back wall of the trunk.
I wasn't impressed at all with the Infinity or Alpine powered units.. at least not in my E500. Of course they filled in the bottom end some.. but just didn't have that extra kick I like.
The Infinity/Alpine units would probably sound much better in a SUV or a hatchback.

I have a single 12 Ecilpse Alum that's waiting to be installed but the more I listen to the stock HK system. I can see that there's no way the mids and tweet is going to be able to keep up with even a single 12". Given that I'll be hearing and feeling more bass, but I'd bet that's probably all I'll be hearing is bass. LOL

Can anyone input on this?

I haven't had that problem.. yet.
The JL I used is a 10" and I dont' have the amp turned up all that much. It hits real hard.
A 12".. hard to say.
One thing you will find though if your car is anything like mine (05 E500) once you really put some sub-bass to it.. it's a rattle monster. Rear door ashtrays, the 3 rear headrests jump up and down with each bass drum hit (I velcro'd them down as they dont' get used in my car), both front and rear 'dome' light centers, driver and passenger doors, obviously the rear deck rattles bad with a sub stuck to it. I was amazed at how rattle free this car was (except for the squeaky front seats) while driving it to turning into one of the most rattle plauged cars I have ever been in after adding some sub bass to it. The mat fixed it but man, what alot of work.

yah, I almost forgot about the rear head rest. I have an 04 e320 4matic. Already I'm hearing rattles with my stock 10's. lol
