Changing head unit question

Is it true that if I replace the stock Becker radio in my 92 190E 2.6, with a new unit like a Sony model, that I also will have to replace all the speakers?

No, but you will likely want to anyway to appreciate the best sound out of your new head unit.

Can't remember but do the '92's still have the speaker fader switch located in the center console?

Thanks for the information. Yes, the 92's have the speaker fader switch located in the center console, that will be history, when I install a new head unit, however I remember reading a post on another MB site that someone was able to make it function with a new head unit, actually that is a concern, I dislike having any non functional device in my cars. Why did you ask?

I asked so I could advise that if you want the easiest install, try to find a head unit that can be run in 2-channel mode. That way you'll use the fader switch, avoid having to run new speaker leads, and can just replace the speakers later at your convenience. This route is the easiest but will only provide marginally better sound due to the stock small speaker mounting locations.

If you want a major sound quality improvement, you'll want to run your head unit in 4-channel mode, run new speaker leads, and mount larger speakers. This is tough to do in 201's so you may want to enlist the services of an audio shop. You'll also have a dead fader switch but you can use the location to mount something else like a power lead or connector for and Ipod interface.

be cautious that the impedence on the old speakers is not too low for the new stereo. you could end up damaging the head unit. Most likely it is and yes the speakers would need to be replaced. You can get a great set of speakers for less than 400 bucks.
