XM Antenna

Tomorrow they are suppose to instal XM radio with a custom instal in the ashtray. The downside is they were talking about putting the antenna on the outside of the car where the roof meets the front windshield at the corner of the driver side. That kinda looks outaplace imo and wanted to see if anyone else has a suggestion of where it could go. THe guy at the instal shop said they always put the antenna there, and anywhere else would lose reception. I just dont like the idea of a black puck being put right there.

.............you absolutely do not need to put the antenna outside the car. If you car does not have aftermarket tint, you can place the the antenna on the rear deck behind the rear passenger head rest. If your car has an aftermarket tint, then get on opf those very small antennas and place it between the dash and the front windshield.

The best spot for the antenna is on the center of the roof. As you move away from that spot, reception will be gradually degraded. Even factory installations cheat a bit and use the edge of the roof or trunk. Putting the antenna inside the car will result in further signal loss. It's a compromise of reception versus looks and how difficult it is to run the antenna lead.

The reason they want to put it there is because that leaves them with the shortest run to snake the antenna wire. They're just looking for the quickest installation. No roof antenna mounted off center like that looks good.

Satellite radio has enough drop-outs so for the best reception, choose the antenna location based solely on an unblocked line of sight to tbe satellite.
