Navigation Install Help

Who has put aftermarket navigation in their car? I have an 01 CLK and I want to get something like the eclipse avn 5500 for my car but I want to know how hard it is to install. Has anyone put a double din in their clk? How hard is it to do and can you see any mods you need to make "behind the scenes"?

hahaha.. that usually happens in every forum.

anyway... you will have to customize a kit for the double din avn 5500 into your clk and that is probably the hardest part. ppl usually install it down at the section where the ashtray and pocket is.

As far as wiring goes, there would just be a few more wires over installing a normal aftermarket HU.

-custom radio/dash kit
-correct harness

that should be it.

I really don't think there's one for the prior gen clks. also, if you have bose system.. you will have to bypass it as well. if you need us to help you, you have to give us some specs of your ride man.

I honestly don't know much about this stuff but I know I want navigation. This is the car I bought from ebay although I had it shipped to Florida and won't be driving it until a week from Tuesday. Just thought I would get a jump start on modifying it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...9342505&rd=1,1

The Eclipse unit is pretty good, however they really don't have a plan for future developments, and when adding equipment or upgrades, it is always like adding a patch. This works but you have to do this, cut this, lose that.

I am an Alpine fan and get on a pedestal and preach it, but Alpine has a issues with supply and demand, large demand and no supply. So I was searching for alternatives and after some R&D, Kenwood Excelon gear does a great job.

The Kenwood version would be slightly more than the Eclipse, and the Alpine would be double the price. However with the Alpine, you get the BEST navigation in the world (next month the new DVD comes out with the updated ZAGAT guide) and always has room for future developments.

Personally my preference is the Alpine.

If you have a Video iPod, the possibilities are endless

I'm picking up my 01c240 this week and I just had the dealer take it to a car audio place to have a avn5510 installed. The install with the blue tooth and ipod option took him a day to do. he didn't mention anything about mods behind the deck but he did say he had to do some work on the mold. go to cartunesetc.com in pelham and talk to Matt. Hope this helps. I haven't seen it yet but he did call me last night and told me how stock and slick the deck looked in the car.

Exactly. Why didn't you think of it? Much of this has been posted before, and you wouldn't have to wait for the answer. Then, if you had more detailed questions not covered already, members could be of more help.
