Will the new ipod classic work in the '08 C Class?

I hear Apple changed the authentication chips in the new ipods so third party vendors can't play them. I don't know what this means for Mercedes. I am concerned and want to know if the ipod integration kit that Mercedes installs will be compatible with the new ipods.

No personal experience here, nor any specific engineering experience with the new iPods. However, what I am reading on other forums and blogs indicates that Apple requires a video out authentication chip to display iPod video on a TV screen. Allegedly, the authentication chip is built into the 3rd party device, and is permitted only for Apple-authorized devices. Some of the "devices" are cables.

However, there is conflicting information as to whether the "authentication chip" is merely a software problem, despite mention of the "authentication chip" in advertisements for some hardware (see e.g., http://www.saffire-usa.com/modele.htm).

Because the OE MB iPod kit is a joint MB/Apple project, it is likely that at least newer kits will have the authentication chip, if there is one. I have no inside info here, so I cannot say that the original iPod kits will display video with the new generation (September '07 release) iPods.

However, my best guess is that the MB iPod kit will at minimum continue to play music and display song titles, etc. with the new generation iPods as it did for older iPods, since that is not dependent on video out capability.

Thanks for explaining! That makes it a little more understandable. Hopefully there will not be a problem.

I tried my daughters I-Pod classic last night in my E350 06model and it works fine.

Doesn't show movie clips but audio is all good.

I can't see if you will have any problems.

I also just read that some folks are having problems advancing the song display on the new iPods when connected to 3rd party devices. Apparently the actual music advances, but the title does not. That is without doubt a software problem with the new iPods that should be fixed in an update. When you plug your iPod into your computer, iTunes automatically checks for software updates and asks if you want to load it when one is available. Best to do that.
