basic audio upgrades...where to start??

basic audio upgrades...where to start??
For a while now I have been noticing that the front speakers in my 99 clk 320 are crackly and the whole system in general doesn't match the rest of the car in terms of performance.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to this, i'm not really looking to pour thousands into a high-tech audio system. maybe just replace the factory speakers for something better.....i'm not sure how many speakers / what size i have.....

also, will adding an amp give me better quality audio performance or just make it louder?

any recommendations for an audio noob?
