I want to install Bluetooth in my '03 C32 using a V60 cradle and puck. I've read Skylaw's excellent thread at https://mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=188818, and as a preliminary step I'm trying to determine what (if any) type of PSE is installed.

So I look in my trunk and behind my spare tire is a black box with a Motorola logo on it. Can anyone tell me what this is?

That's the dual-band compensator (antenna amplifier) and indicates your car has been "pre-wired" for phone.

It looks more like a PSE (Portable Support Electronics) unit, vice the dual band linear compensator. However, it is not the Autosense PSE that would have been installed in the car if it had the OE hands free phone option; nor does it look like the voice control unit. Further, its part number does not match any of the phone system or voice control components for the '03 C-Class.

The linear compensator is a dark brownish-gray square metal box with cooling fins. The components can be seen in the phone bulletins at http://home.earthlink.net/~phdwebsit..._bulletins.htm

If the component pictured has an antenna lead (it seems to - the brass connector at the lower right) that goes to a small square silver box (the antenna switch) that is in turn connected to the car's external antenna lead, then it is probably the Tele-Aid module (and you probably have a hands free system installed as well). If there is no silver box (antenna switch) and it goes directly to the external antenna, then it is the Tele-Aid module, and you definitely do not have the hands free phone system; only the wiring harnesses the equipment plugs into.

Looks like an Emergency Call Control unit for COMAND used in cars built before 10/2003.

It is a definite purpose analog cellular telephone. It can only phone home (Tele-Aid) and the analog cellular support is toast. You have an interesting turn of the century paper weight that supports D2B fiber optics.

Emergency Call Control Unit = Tele-Aid module. Different names for the same thing. And you are correct - it is straight analog, and the Tele-Aid Service will no longer support it after January 1, 2008. In fact, the whole analog cellular band in the U.S. has been reallocated to other uses by the FCC, and analog cellular service will soon be gone nationwide. There is a Tele-Aid module upgrade program, if anyone is interested - see post #3 at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/audi...displayed.html (check the MBUSA site for information that may have been updated).

You can order the Autosense PSE (sometimes called a dual-sense PSE) or a straight V60 PSE through your dealer; sometimes you can find one on e-bay (but be sure to check part numbers; as you can see, sometimes ebay sellers don't know what they are selling); or contact any number of Mercedes parts houses, especially those that handle electronics components.

The Autosense has numbers Q 682 0754, SYN 9266A. The straight V60 PSE had numbers Q 682 0845, or 0886, SYN 9266B. Those are all the part numbers I have for V60 PSEs, and they are the individual component numbers - not kit numbers. The Autosense was the PSE originally designed for your car. You may also need a "Y" harness.

Be advised that for some cars the parts kits have reached end-of-life and are no longer available as kits; but the individual components of the kits are still available. Dealer parts folks may tell you something is no longer available, when in fact it is simply no longer available packaged together with the other components of the kit.

Also, be sure you order the newer cradle (the one for the V60s phone); because older V60 phones were slightly smaller than newer V60s phones, the V60 Bluetooth puck has more trouble making solid contacts in the older, smaller cradle. This has sometimes resulted in poor voice quality. See post #24 at https://mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=188818, even if you don't plan to use a V60s phone.

If you are going to use straight Bluetooth, as your first post indicates, you will not need a linear compensator or antenna switch. If you want to use a cradle such as the SmoothTalker that charges your phone and connects to the external antenna for better signal strength, you will need the linear compensator.
