Thumbs down Farewell

Several weeks ago, someone decided to delete the sticky, "How-to Guide For Cell Phone Upgrades, Plug-in And Bluetooth" that was once posted here. No reason was given.

The string had been up for about a year. It had been viewed over 15,000 times, and was still active.

It took months of work over a period of about 3 years to gain the knowledge to write it. The string itself took two days just to write and to error check. The followup answers to questions have (all together) taken weeks of research and analysis. Other forum members had made superb contributions. The number of people contacting me for follow questions on equipment and installation indicated continuing use and value.

But it is gone, and apparently there is no interest on the part of people who run this forum to respond as to why, or to make efforts to restore it.

I have twice tried to contact forum administrators - one, about 10 days ago, another about a week ago. No reply.

Therefore, I have decided to waste no more time or effort on this forum. I will not return to it after today. However, I do not blame the members of the forum for the attitudes of the administrators - so I continue to do what I can regarding audio and telematics issues, and the W220, on BenzWorld. If you have specific questions on matters I can help you with, I will accept PM and e-mail through that forum.

And you can find the How-To Guide over there, at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/audi...bluetooth.html

Skylaw - Really sorry to see you go . . . at least someone knows what the hell they are doing.

Thanks for all of your work, contribution, and insight.

i've had my share of run-ins with mods here, even with threat of banishment if I
posted TSBs I got off Alldata subscription for members. pretty chicken poo-poo,
I opine. I figured I continue to do whatever I normally do and let the chips fall
where they may. Ironic (and hypocritcal) is having a mod contact me via PM
asking for TSBs. what a hoot, eh? will see you on the other boards, S.

This must be still different, I do not remember Skylaw posting a single MB confidential or copyright document but more referring to documents that are available at other sites or MB itself.

Most of the value in the sticky was personal knowledge from Skylaw.

I was sometimes wondering if the thread could be "cleaned up" from so many redundant user queries. The essential info could have been repeated on an new sticky and possibly a link to the old one.

Some forums have a huge list of sticky topics making browsing the inconvenient. This is not the case here.

I don't mind where Skylaw posts as long as he is available. But it would add value for this forum if he could be convinced to reappear here.

I can understand the moderators need to maintain a certain set of rules, especially in these days of excessive and egregious litigation. But, the last time I looked at the thread I saw nothing that would point to any issues in that regard, just a valuable distillation of a great deal of information. The thread was removed either because the moderators thought there was a violation of the rules, a third party raised an issue with it, or just plain old stupidity (haven't we all deleted something we wish we hadn't). What ever the reason, I think they should have the common decency to own up to the reasons, both to Skylaw and to the other members of the forum.

This is bogus... I've referred to that sticky on multiple occasions. I see no reason why it should have been taken down. I say put it back up.

The mods should chime and at least tell us why it was removed.

The sticky post was helpful. So was Skylaw. This doesn't make sense. We are losing both the written resource and the very valuable participation of Skylaw. I vote for keeping them both.

I just verified that the thread was accidentally deleted. It was NOT intentional and there is no reason a thread like this would have been removed deliberately. We are working to restore it asap. Apologies for the inconvenience.

I will contact Skylaw to make him aware of the error. This forum is about the sharing of information, and this thread was great information. It upsets me greatly that this mistake was made on a thread like this.

Thank You For Your Support - I'm Back

I did indeed receive a kind e-mail from Mr. Vanos, and I am satisfied that the removal of the string was an error. Mr. Vanos explained that an effort was being made to remove a copyrighted attachment somewhere in the string that inadvertently resulted in loss of the entire string. Removal of a copyrighted attachment would have been entirely appropriate.

I will therefore return to the forum, and hope that the posts will be helpful.

Although I had removed the option of e-mail notification of postings to subscribed strings, PMs and regular e-mail, I nonetheless received e-mail notice of the support offered by members here. I deeply appreciate it; indeed, through the actions of one or more members of the forum, the matter did reach the level of attention needed.

I will wait a few days to see if the string can be recovered from backup tapes, as Mr. Vanos indicated. If it cannot, I will do my best to reconstitute and update my input; unfortunately, I cannot replace the often excellent additional contributions of other members. Waiting for re-posting from backup tapes would benefit the forum more.

Thank you again for your support - and Mr. Vanos, thank you for your efforts.

I am one of the MBW member, lurching the webpage to gain the knowledge of the MB cars, which both my wife & me are driving (they are 4 MB cars we owned, beside numerous of BMW, Acura, Nissan).
I got some informations thru yours advices to others MBW members, I have yet to made the decision on (what to do) with our cars, before CA law in effect on July 1st 2008, on hand free phone.. Your contributions to this site is appreciated by the majority silence members of this site (I am one). I am elated that you are coming back with your wealth of knowledge (that sometime the SA should have, to help theirs customers) to help all of us, sometime, we cannot get from our authorize MB dealer (or we get with an outrage price quote !). (I got quote "$1800.00 for the ARGUS hand free phone thru my dealer !!!!).
I am glad that everything is resolved to your satisfied.(I printed your thread for my personnel use before the thread was delete). Welcome back.

i dont have a problem with that. some people have jobs and real responsibilities
which preclude them from living at their keyboards dikking around on the web.
plus, there is always the background investigation of events, housekeeping, etc
and recalling back up tapes, etc. 5 days is not unreasonable to determine and/
or conclude an investigation, I opine.
