What Will Happen When XM and Sirius Merge?
I'm in the market for a new head unit and would like it to get satellite radio.
The FCC chairman just recommended approval of Sirius buying out XM. Does this mean I should opt for Sirius over XM, or will older units be able to receive the new combined service?
Anybody know what the companies plan to do w/existing customers?
Thanks in advance.

Nobody knows for sure. I prefer XM. Other prefer Sirius. A google search will pull up multiple perspectives. Search for xm sirius merger.
Hope this helps.

It remains to be seen. It would be technically possible for Sirius to merge the satellite constellations and the programming - coverage would be better all around. It will be driven more by corporate decisions than technological obstacles.

Helios,
It looks like you are talking about a tuner that will allow you to get programming from either XM and/or Sirius. That kind of plan will be called "A la Carte."
According to the merger's press release, "A la carte programming will only be available for subscribers using new radios, which will be developed following approval of the merger.
Hope this helps,
Jose

"Following the merger of SIRIUS and XM, consumers will be able to obtain the best of both SIRIUS and XM, on any of today’s satellite radio devices with one monthly subscription. XM customers would continue to receive their existing XM service, and be able to obtain certain SIRIUS programming. SIRIUS customers would continue to receive their existing SIRIUS service, and be able to obtain certain XM programming. This will be available through existing SIRIUS and XM radios at a monthly cost of $16.99, a savings of 34 percent, compared to what it would cost to receive both services today."
