Hardwired radar detector?

I bought a 2005 E55 a few months ago, loving every moment of it. Just recently as I was backing up, my turn signal indicators started flashing red and beeps starting coming from the dash, which sounded like a radar detector. I was fearing that there was some sort of electronic malfunction, so I checked for any messages from the car... none. Turned off the engine, started it again, and the lights and beeps started from the moment I turned the car on.

I went to a local grocery store to pick up some things, and the lights and sounds were constantly going off. I was thinking to myself, "I guess I'll bring her in to have it looked at tomorrow." When I happened to drive through my neighborhood that has one of those speed indicator kiosks, and the lights and beeps started again, in a very rhythmic manner.

"Could it be a hardwired radar detector?" I asked myself. So I took a video of it and POSTED IT on youtube. I've done some testing and it indeed is a radar detector. The dealership I bought the car from never made mention of it. I'm assuming they did not know, or else they would mention it as a selling point of the car.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I believe it is. Looks like an adaptation of the k40 radar detectors. Check here.

yep thats a custom installed UN2000.. congrats you got a $2000 radar system on your car. look at the lower dash panel and you should find the control knob which will let you turn it on/off and control the volume.

Ah ha! Thanks, guys. I've since done the research on the K40 site and answered all the questions I had. I still have no idea how it turned on. I may have brushed the control knob with my hand or knee one day. Again, thanks for all the help.

Same Thing

happened to me soon after I bought mine. Lights went off, car starts chirping. I immediately pulled over and started to read owner's manual thinking that I was in limp home mode. Found the K40 instruction manual behind all of the other documentation. Sweet surprise....

Well, it's not all roses. The radar randomly stopped turning on, even with the control switch. One day, I hit the button to release the headrests on the rear seats and my dash chirped and the lights blinked twice, but still no radar. I'm thinking it's a wiring problem. Does anyone know where I should go to have this looked at?
