Euro Vs US Command map differences
For example, displaying the map while driving to work, I end up driving on a blank screen because there is no road detail near my office. But on the ML, there is road detail up until I drive into the parking lot.
Is this because of the difference in the software between the two or is there just some setting that is different ?

............I have comand in my CLK. I know for certain that the maps are from Navtech. I also have the Pioneer navigation system in another car. That system has orders of magnitude more detail compared to the MCS or the Comand CDROM for passenger cars. All maps are made by Navtech. That Navtech makes different maps with different degrees of detail for different systems is not unusual. Why Navtech does this is a mystery.

Ted - I didn't doubt you, I was just surprised that the Navtech web site didn't list any MB except the M-Class.
I sent an email to Navtech but haven't received a response yet.
I think I would rather have more CDs and more detail than less CDs and less detail.

"Hi Brian,
Thank you for contacting us and visiting our website.
Yes, there are differences in the coverage and detail between the map CDs for those two systems. But then again, there are differences between different versions of map CDs within the same system also. Also, not to make things more confusing, both systems use our NAVTECH map data.
Your CLK has a navigation system made by Bosch. Bosch is also responsible for manufacturing and distributing the map CDs for their system. So the coverage and detail you see in their CDs would depend on the frequency of the updates they manufacture. You can contact them at 1.877.462.2528 for more information about available and upcoming map disk versions.
Your ML has a navigation system made by Alpine. We at Navigation Technologies manufacture, distribute, and support the map CDs for this system. Typically, new versions are released once a year and perhaps the freshness of the CDs for this system are the reason behind the perceived completeness of the coverage. Version numbers of the CDs are printed on the
label sides of the disks. The most current version is the 2002.1 which was just released a couple of weeks ago. You can purchase them online or by calling us at 1.888.NAVMAPS.

Have you already noticed the comand navigation shows names of waters...instead of names of roads (like in the ML with MCS)...I wonder what kind of driver is interested in the names of waters...
The details on the map are subject to how the CDs are ordered by the manufacturer of the navigation unit...somehow Bosch has a strange order setup.
Nevertheless I hope you like the comand and thans again for diner, driving me around and having me stay at your place. I apreciate that!
Next time you are in the Netherlands, let me know and I will buy you dinner.
greetingz,
In Europe, we get COMAND in the ML and not MCS, and all COMAND systems (in any vehicle) use Teleatlas maps. (www.teleatlas.com)
Which is a shame, because the Navtech mapping data is better... (well it certianly is on the Audio-30 APS, the European 1 din slot nav unit). Lets hope GB 2003DX is better that 2002DX.
Cheers
Richard
Yes, I love the new Command. I was just curious about differences in map detail. And yes, it is strange to include more waterway descriptions than road descriptions. As long as it gets me to my destination, I'm happy.
Hopefully I'll have a chance to visit the Netherlands again this year during my European business trips.
Hope everything has been going well out on the west coast !
Brian
