Power Input
Currently I have a mp3 CD player that uses one of those standard cigarrette lighter plugs to draw its power from the car. I want to hook in the power by splicing a power wire behind my stock radio unit, so I don't have to always have that big ugly cigarette lighter plug.
My question is, would this be a straightforward split or are there any power conversions I need to know about?

You need to know your MP3 voltage.
Odds are that big ugly power plug reduces the car's 12 volts to 6 or 5 or 3 or some lesser voltage for your MP3 player, and also filters the power. Your MP3 owner's manual should say. Sometimes it is stamped on the player at the power socket.
The simplest approach would be to purchase an auxiliary power socket with pigtail wires, plug your adapter into that, and wire the whole mess in behind the head unit. An alternative would be to purchase one that has the same output voltage.

What is an auxiliary power socket with pigtail wires? Can you perhaps show a link? Thanks.

This is the closest I could find...
...in a quick search. Cut off the plug end and discard it.
