subwoofers
i have a 99ML with Bose. Looking for a better sound and was told to get a new amp and subwoofer placed in back. Thoughts re placement or logic?

Out Of Control!!
If you're looking for more bass then add a subwoofer and an amp, if you want better mids and highs replace the speakers, add tweeters, and a 4 way amp. Hope this helps.

I just bought component speakers for the front and 6x9's for the back. they have good mid, high and decent bass, but for loud low frequencies go for an amp and sub.

That is exactly what I did CL55. It did wonders. I had a complete aftermarket system in my previous car and this one sounds every bit as good. Just add an amp and a sub.

basically what blackbenzz said was good. but if your looking for clear sound and good music you get a head unit because head unit produces the sound and sends it out to the speakers. most people think that if they just have speakers they have good and clear sound, not true.

I agree with JackoOnMyBacko... I just installed CDA-7897 (Alpine headunit) into C230 I'm currently driving (1998, not sure but believe it has standard sound system), that did wonders! the only thing is that those speaks can't handle the lvls my headunit can work on (if I got above 23 on the sound lvl the speaks distort, and the unit will go past 40!)
I don't know much about your car, but from what I've seen on the C230, I'd do it in this order: Headunit, subs, speakers... or if you don't care much for base, get the speakers then the subs.
MB does have a decent sound system and good positioning of the speakers, but they are fairly weak compared to what is availible. Once you change the unit, it will drive your speakers at their limits, since they were designed for weaker factory sound, so basically if you change one thing, you'll mostlikely end up changing alot more
