depends. my audio is only fiber optic for the cd player.
But i ended up getting another HU and will be connecting that to amps which will power my speakers and subwoofer. it will cost you quite a bit.

DIY is cheaper. See my DIY thread with pictures above. I wanted a lot of clean sound. I did it in my 07 E320 Bluetec, currently only driving 4 OEM door speakers and tweeters. Cost was a decent 4 channel amp, a cheap 4-channel LOC (Line output controller) and a few connectors available from Radio Shack. You can avoid using an LOC if you purchase an amplifier that takes speaker level input.
It can get very expensive if you intend to hook into fiber optics (also known as MOST: Media Oriented Systems Transport). Mainly reccommended by folks selling them.
Go for it if you can afford it; lots of audio control at a steep price.

I did a 2 channel amp, its around 100w rms x 2 going to the fronts, which I replaced with a set of Image Dynamics components. When I was able to listen to it without issues I was having it sounded awsome.
Now I did hook the amp up to the stock speakers before replacing them, and I would have to admit, that the stock speakers sound pretty damn good with that much power going to them. They are 2ohm, so they ended up getting 200w a side, but damn. Some could argue that they sound better than the Image Dynamics I replaced them with.
I ended up damaging them taking them out to replace them, but if I could do it all over again, I would just run an amp and keep the stock speakers stock.
Carefully read Pinebaron's write up/how to. Its all I needed to figure out how to do it all yourself. Just be carefull of the chassis noise you will probably end up picking up

"MURDERED OUT" 2005 E55 AMG
very helpful, but doesnt mercedes make a optical loop that makes the system think there is a radio or is there a way of bypassing that so you could accommodate a aftermarket radio and entire system?? cause I have lots of experience with audio systems just not mercedes vehicles per say...I have a full system ready to go in my e55 but i have read that once you remove the radio the car goes nuts and drains the system or charging system...

Audio Sound Cuts Out
Looking for advice on where to start to solve odd audio problem. When playing radio or cd player the audio sound suddenly cuts out for 3-5 seconds for all speakers. When this happens the radio does not shutdown only the sound. Audio cut out frequency is around every 15-20 minutes but increases when exterior temperature is above 85 degrees. Dealer cannot solve problem. Can this be an Command unit or Amp problem.

BTW, does anyone know where to buy compatible w211 center channel speaker other than purchasing from dealer
