iTronics BT not working in 05 R230

So I've just installed an iTronic BT/iPod in my 05 R230. My car already has an MHI contact plate & the phone options show up in the menu. My understanding is that I should be able to disable the OEM phone features & use the iTronic features instead.

I installed the iTronic by disconnecting the MOST fiber from the CD changer & connecting it to the iTronic. I also found the "VCS" unit that's referenced in the Mercedes StarTek bulletin for installing the MB phone kit. I disconnected the MOST fiber from the VCS and connected it to the fiber loopback plug that came with the iTronics kit.

What I'm finding is that the iPod "mostly" works. For some reason, the "seek -" / back arrow streering wheel button doesn't work when the HU is in any of the random play modes (random tracks, random CD, etc.), but it works fine during normal play.

The other problem is that the car doesn't see the phone at all. The phone IS properly paired with the iTronics. However, when I select TEL from the menus, I get the message "Phone not inserted".

Not sure what I could've done wrong...
