Why would anyone want/need separate amps for AM and FM? Makes no sense at all. Why do you ask?

Signal --> Antenna --> Tuner --> PreAmp --> Amp --> Fader/Balance --> Speaker

There are such things a antenna amplifiers but I doubt that Mercedes has them in thier cars. Car radios usually have excellent sensitivity that would make such an amp superfluous. Local/distance switches are actually attenuation to knock down powerful signals that are too much for a radio tuner to handle.

The C class has antenna amplifiers. The ones in the coupe can be damaged by water when tint shops try to install the tint from the back of the car with the hatch raised.

See my post titled Thoughts Please, after you read it I would appreciate any suggestions, the reason I mentioned separate amps for am and fm is a local stereo shop installer said he was having a problem similar to mine on his 99 Jetta and his am amp was bad, maybe it was an antenna amp as mentioned by Lynn in this current thread.

1. Amps usually means audio amps in an audio system. Antenna amps are something else.

2. Where is your thread "Thoughts please?"

I know in ML it has an AM amp in the liftgate and from there I think most/all MB model does has one. This amp require power from the HeadUnit to power up if you change to after market HU you need to wire this line to the power out on the new HU. Most of the time the installer don't know it there and the result is no AM.

Thanks Tony. My speakers sound like they are blown in AM mode and when I switch to FM they sound fine,could a bad AM amp be the problem? There is also no static in AM but as the annoucer speaks it's when the speakers sound blown.

Thanks

Thanks. Well, the answer may be the crappy AM reception in general, a poor connection to the AM antenna or, if such exists, the separate antenna amp for AM. What evidence is there for the latter?

Did you look at the sound setting on the AM mode, on my I have separate setting for each mode AM, FM, CD, NAV.....etc.

Other option is bring it into the dealer, maybe the ground connection at the antenna is loose.

Sorry that all I know.

Tony
