Navigation DVD Help
After three years of owning this car I have decided to install navigation in my 2005 E500 Wagon with the help of this forum. When searching around about the maps I am unsure of what to buy. Don't need the best of the best but also want to keep it current. Would like to buy used off of Ebay or equal but need some assistance. I am in New York and travel the east coast at best, which dvd should I be looking for. Thanks

In answering, I am assuming you have the nav unit installed, and you are looking to buy a nav DVD. A single DVD covers North America.
See either your dealer or NavTeq. I suggest your dealer in this case, because since you have skipped annual updates (which also install nav firmware updates) a new DVD may not be usable until the interim updates are installed. Your dealer will normally do these free if you buy there.
The NavTeq site at http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INT...llProducts=YES will tell you what the latest release version number.
If you need to install the entire nav unit, there is more to tell - but I won't launch into that unless I know that's what you're actually asking.

I bought the drive a while back and now I have ordered the balance of the parts to do the install. I am using the nav install thread on this site as my guide so I would like to have a dvd when I install it to see how it works. The NavTeq link gave me a price of $249, I was hoping not to spend that much. Is it really that much better or would a two year old dvd be acceptable. My current Garmin is about two years old and works fine for me, I have also read here that the MB system leaves little to be desired. The reason I say this is becouse I see plenty of dvd's on Ebay that would probably be fine for my use and would not be so pricey.
So I guess my question now is, can I buy a used dvd and still get decent operation and which would you recommend. Thanks.

Yes, you can get a used DVD for that. Unfortunately, I don't have any part numbers for you (the site that used to list those is no longer available). Just be sure the DVD you buy is one for your car - while several models may share one DVD, there are several different DVDs, and they won't work in cars they weren't intended for.
The seller should be able to tell you if the disc is for your E-Class (which is also the same one for the S-Class, CL, E, SLK, SL, and CLS). It's on the label.
However, of course, a newer DVD will give more updated information; info on the latest release is generally one to two years old at release. if you buy a DVD that's 3 years old, you're dealing with info up to 5 years old. In a well-settled area that may not be too bad. If you can buy an older one cheap, for setup and experimenting, go ahead - you can decide later whether to update. If there has been a lot of (now-completed) construction near you, get a new one.
