How do i get my Iphone to work in the UCI ?

Ive tried connecting my iPhone 4 through the UMI as i believe its called, in the glove box just so i can have music playing and control what is being played through the command system. But i cant seem to get this to work, Ive tried the standard iPod cable that comes with car but that doesn't work the command and the iPhone don't even recognize they are connected and i have also tried the USB and plugged in my USB cable that comes with iPhone, this had a better effect as it began to charge the iPhone. But on the screen of the command system it said device not compatible, is there a new UMI cable or something i could do to be able to play and control music through the command ?

Is your COMAND plug & play, or do you have to set your unit to AUX?
Is your cable a 3.5 mm single rca post?
