Shoot lots and lots and learn from your shots on what you can and can't do with your existing equipment.
I spent my first year shooting only in manual exposure with spot metering, trying to figure out what all those strange numbers and words meant and did. Only when I started getting contracts did I start using the convenience features to capture shots quicker.
