2001 E Class Estate Radio Reception

I have just replaced Audio 10 package with Alpine Head Unit, Speaker upgrades and Sub. CD sound is super however, Radio performance is poor due to an aerial problem. I understand there is an aerial amp, with the Alpine head unit it does not seem to work, power problem? Only the strongest of FM stations are recieved with no AM at all. I also tried a Kenwood unit this also suffered poor radio reception. (retried original radio - its fine!)
Any idea's of a fix to this problemo?
Where is the aerial amp situated on the estate?
I know there is a £100 lead that will link the Alpine to the steering wheel controls - would this also address the aerial amp problem if its a power issue?

Any help or advise greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Mark
