Rote Katze

Recently, I upgraded from the factory Bose tape/changer setup to an iPod/CD/Bluetooth head unit from Kenwood. (KDC-BT945U) It comes with a microphone to let you use the phone hands free. I was pondering (dreading) how to get the microphone wire from the head unit location to where the microphone would be. Kenwood recommends putting in on top of the steering column, but I think it could be better. In fact, I can't think of a better way to do this than to utilize the factory microphone up in the dome light cluster, or if that won't work, just the wiring.
Does anyone know where the wires in the overhead microphone run to and what color they are?
Is there any known reason why this wouldn't work?

The wiring connects in two locations, to the E-call unit and VCS.
