if you owned this since new, did you have anything added to the vehicles Comand? back up camera, video in motion, etc?

if bought used, does it have the back-up camera feature?

I think the last thing to look at it before needing a new one is to see if there is anything spliced into the wiring harness in the back. I seen a camera programmer/video in motion module cause an SL to act possessed, and was the camera module that was not properly installed

The dealer is a bit lost.

One of the optical units is failing on the optical ring and causing a blackout which makes the head unit fail. Check for leaking seals or water damage.

One you can estalish which part of the optical ring is the problem
- Head unit
- Teleaid
- Voice control
- TV
- CD stacker
- Sound system
- Phone module

You should replace that part. You also have to check every fuse for every option mentioned above.

I don't think so. I can power up a COMAND on a bench with power and ground and it will initialize with an open optical ring. I seen this before on a boot up, the radio is corrupt, usually from someone trying to modify it after reading something on the internet... Comand turns on via CAN communications, the optical is the back up, but I forget if the function block is in the coding for the turn on that style of radio.

also the SDS talks to the COMAND via CAN, not optical.

Software is corrupt or one of the interior components inside the comand is screwed. you can probably find a comand at the LKQ junk yard cheap, and then just replace parts.. just try and make sure if you do it is from a vehicle with the back up camera installed. which is really the only difference between the 2 radios of that model year.

99.9999% sure

just pull the radio and unplug the optical, it is the two orange cables that plug into a small retaining plug in the main harness bottom corner
