"Key Not Detected" Keyless Go error message

"Key Not Detected" Keyless Go error message
My wife has a new, 2013 GL-350 with Keyless Go, and today she called in a panic because as she was driving down the highway the "Key Not Detected" error message appeared on the cluster. The car is only 3 months old and has only 7K miles, so I don't think the battery in the fob could be worn out.
I know Mercedes will say "take it to the dealer," but that is a huge pain.
(Their phone support and Embrace service are both terrible, btw!)
Can anyone suggest how to troubleshoot this issue?
More importantly, is it safe to keep driving when this error message appears??

KG keys also should not be kept too close to the car. Sometimes the garage is too close to the place where the owner keeps the keys.
Absolutely a DIY to change the key batteries. If the driver cannot find new batteries in time, the car can be driven with the key at the ignition slot (this is new enough a car, actually the engine can be started without any battery in the key fob at all).

That's a good point. Thanks. You know what? MB should have their dealers put fresh batteries into the fobs when the cars are delivered, just for the sake of giving new owners the best possible experience. Don't you think?

I just got a 2011 E350 I have the same problem changed the batteries didnt help, then I got a remove the button and insert the key, If I push lock or unlock the message goes away, back to Mercedes I hope they figure it out

I have a new ML350 that is 3 weeks old and I had this error happen to me a few times already. It hasn't happened to me while driving though. If I remember correctly its occurred while I was parking a couple of times or had to open the door for a second (after putting it in park) and then close it. I'm going to start using the second key fob and see if I get the error.
