2010 W221 - flat rear speakers

I noted today that the rear speakers are flat/quiet compared to the front door speaker. In other words, for the same volume setting, the front speakers are much louder than the rear. I confirmed this by fading from front to back and back to front. So I have some kind of issue going on. It seems as through the front speakers are amplified by the rear speakers aren't. Is there a separate amplifier for the front and rear speakers? If so, where are they located so I can check the connection/test/replace? If not, any thoughts or ideas on what I should check?
