V60 and Mercedes UHI Kit. (Semi-Long)

After several weeks of trying to get answers from Motorola and MBUSA, so far I have these replies. The original problem is I live in Orlando, FL, and Motorola does not make a V60 for Cingular GSM down here. They only make one for TDMA. The GSM model they do make will not cover the 850MHz range Cingular has in FL. So my only option is to go with the TDMA, which Cingular has now pulled from the market on their own web-site and will soon be no longer supported on their network, or try and holdout for another option. Here is the reply I got from Motorola:

Dear Mr/Mrs. ,

Thank you for your recent correspondence with Motorola.

Regarding your concern, the v60 series phones are no longer manufactured. The v600 is quad-band, i.e., it works in 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. This model of phone has been released for AT&T. In the near future, it is going to be carried by Cingular as well. There is another model of quad-band phone launched for Cingular's network. That is the v400.

About the car kit, we still do not have all the accessories available for the v600 and the v400, but you would have to replace just the cradle, not the whole car kit.

I would recommend you to contact Cingular for information about availability and prices in your area.

Thank you for allowing us to be of your service, if you need further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Best Regards,

So for those of you about to purchase a V60, you might want to think twice about it, since they do not make them at the factory anymore.

Next I E-Mailed the contact for the Media Release on the UHI Kit from 3/2003:

She has yet to get back to me. I will post her response as soon as I get it. I truly hope there is an alternative coming out soon.

I spoke with MBUSA about this. Mike at the Service center called me back and stated to look for something in the next thirty days that should do what I want. Basically use another model and make phone and be able to integrate it with the current E-Class. Hopefully he is getting good information and not crap.

I think they are at least a little incorrect.

Mercedes just announced the new V60x and V60s handsets, which they are about to put into the markert.

See http://www.curtrich.com/february2004.html for more info.

I got an email from Motorola that said that the UHI would be available later this year (I think they said 2Q) for some MB models and eventually for most. GSM phones will work, including v600s. That has led me to forgo the MB phone on a soon to be delivered E320 wagon and certainly to forgo it for an E500 sedan to replace a car coming off lease in September. It also led me to get a v600 (n ot in my hands yet) and, for other cars, an installation free Bluetooth handsfree system. If the UHi doesn't come out, I could always go to a Motorola Bluetooth car kit that gives you voice dialing and audio muting (assuming it can be mated to the MB audio system). Everything but the steering wheel controls.

Has MB offer Bluetooth yet? I saw a list of manufactories who offer Bluetooth but MB is not on the list. I was thinking they might have to redesign their Command a bit for that, but I am no expert. I tried my V600 in my friend's new Acura TL and it worked great.

i have some wiring diagrams and there is a connector in the new w211 for bluetooth. Maybe it's for a future option. I got these diagrams during the time I was looking for wiring on the e class for the steering wheel heater. YOu can adapt any car kit to the MB but you won't be able to use the steering wheel controls for it. I have voice control installed with the Nokia 6310i GSM phone kit and love it. I wish I could use some of the newer color phones and if the new UHI kit is able interface with the motorola v600s, I'll jump at it!
