Will a BE-1692 fit my 1997 E420 head unit ?

I am sure this is an easy one, but I can't seem to find the information I need. I want to replace my broken stock unit with the BE-1692 but can't find a compatibility table to make sure I can. I've looked at some pics on ebay but hoped someone here knew for sure.

Any other suggestions on replacement units (cheap) would be appreciated.

Thanks......

Please define what "cheap" is!

I would just instead get an Audio 10CD from MBenzNL ... proven to work.

(A BE1492 or 1692 should work fine...but I am not positive because all the numbers run together after a while.)

Cheap being under $200 USD. Not sure I am interested in paying a premium for an in-dash versus using my CD changer. Best I can tell, that's the only difference (right?). I'd like to have the in-dash, but not worth much to me.

Got a used BE3309 (Audio 10) and it fit perfectly. The plugs, the dash, etc.... EXCEPT.... it doesn't recognize the CD changer nor will it shut off with the car... I think I've made a mistake assumming if the plugs matched, the functions would follow.

Any ideas?

First of all... disconnect the C connector (that's the top one with 10 pins). Then the unit should shut off with the car.

However, the CD changer will not work. The Audio 30 uses a fibre optic CD changer, your car uses a non-fibre optic one. You will need a new CD changer and a wiring harness.

At least you can play CDs in the dash! I haven't been able to find a workable navigation CD yet.

Do you know what will work? I'd be ok with just the old fashion in-dash, but this Audio 30 has the tape not the CD..

Any ideas?

What's the real part number for the unit? I know it is a BE3309 model, but the Axxx xxx xx xx part number. So I can look it up.

Talking

208 820 10 86 (02) is the number on the unit I bought - BE 3309.

Other than that the backlight doesn't work, and the CD changer is inop., and it won't shut off... It great!

Thanks for you help on this... the dealer has been a little less than helpful when he realized I could install and bought it on ebay.

Ok... I am retreating a little here. Do you (or anone) know if decide to chuck the changer and buy the audio 10 single CD player if it will work or not.

Although the plugs match on the current radio, the backlight and power off don't work correctly.

Thanks.......

I do know that the Audio 10 CD will work fine with your car if you do not connect the C-connector... as I suggested with your Audio 30 (I have tried an Audio 30APS which is different).

You can use a CD changer but only if you use a new wiring harness, because both the unit you have and the Audio 10CD use fibre optic. The C-connector is only used for CANBUS and CD changer power, which is different than how your C-connector is wired.

I do know that it is likely that your Audio 30 uses CANBUS for some functions as it has a 208 part number.

Sorry that I don't have other suggestions...

That's cool. By the way, disconnectind the C connector did not fix the power off issue. Just FYI.....

Did you notice how many pins are in the C-connector? 5 or 3? I tried my old Audio 30 in my 190E and it worked fine, but it was a 3-pin C-connector. I can try a 5-pin version. But all my Audio 30s are Alpine and not Becker.

It's 5 pin.

Just to clarify, I'd buy the Europe version (as I think someone may had mentioned on the board) on the Audio 10 single CD and it should work fine (correct?).

I am ready to sell this one and go for the in-dash CD and forget the changer.

Thanks.......

The European Audio 10CD should work fine in your car. I have one and I will plug it in to my (modified) 190E to make sure. The 190E has been modified to have the same plugs as your W210, except no C-connector for CD changer.

I bought one off eBay (Germany) and as soon as I can figure out how to get him the money (wire, I guess) I'll have it to install. I'll let you know.
