Nothing MB related (sorry)
Guess not. If the ML changer is from 1998, it won't have fiber optic wires... So you cannot connect it to just any head unit...

There are many aftermarket changers that use Panasonic protocol, such as Rockford Fosgate, Panasonic, etc.

so will *any* new panasonic head unit control the changer in the (older) ML?
also - what about the wiring harness coming from the factory system to an aftermarket HU?
thanks for all your help!

1) not necessarily. and if you replace the head unit, compatible CD changers really are only about $100-150.
2) you will need an adapter. with adapters sometimes running $100 after all the parts are purchased, why not get a new CD changer?
I would have said all this earlier if you told us what you were trying to do.
