updated set has new streets, stores, etc that were recently built and not on previous editions. i bought the updated set. mb also offers some new nav disc program that you sign up for and they send you updated discs when they are released. im not too sure of the details, my service guy mentioned it to me last time i was at the dealer

Another new feature of the 04 disc is you can put in one disc and use that same disc to go across the US. Shows the major highways with this feature. To get local streets you need to insert the appropiate state disc. I use the CA disc and enter (for example) New York City and it tells me the mileage and starts the route.

I bought a 2004 CA/NV/Hawaii NAV CD off e-bay as part of a set, but there are many streets that were not updated on the disc (streets 2-3 years old). I am waiting for the new 2005 CD to come out and hopefully the streets will appear.

It doesn't, however, appear to have the points of interest updated to include Santana Row.
A side effect of the new cross-country driving capability is that many cities (like San Jose) now require you to choose from among the three San Joses in the US. It lists the choices, with the county and state information for each one. So there's often one more selection/click operation required in a nav destination entry.
