Tapping the fiber ring in w203 for phone install

Hi all. I searched and searched the forums and couldn't find an answer to this question, so here goes...

In my '02 w203 coupe I'm installing a 6310i kit which I purchased from steve. Found the DB50 connector and fiber in the right rear trunk. When trying to tap into the fiber ring I have run into a problem.

When taking the black cover off the floor of the right front of the trunk all I found back there was a free loop of fiber labeled "SBS in / SBS out" and one labeled "radio out" which is spliced in line to one labeled "tel-in."Here are pictures of the fiber in the trunk and the PSE connected, respectively:

I've taken the right trunk liner off and still haven't found any other fiber there. It appears that two strands run to the front of the car. I can follow the "radio-out" back there and I assume the other one is coming straight from the PSE, although it's hard to follow.

The car is non-bose and has the cd changer. Everything was working prior to this install and everything still is working fine. When I shine a light into the clear connector at the PSE, it shines through the "tel-in" line, however I can't find the other end of the cable at the PSE.

My question is, if all the audio components were working before connecting the PSE, then it can't possibly be connected to the active ring, right? If not, how can I tap into it and what's going on with that tel-in/radio out connector?

've already posted this question in the w203 forum but I figured this one might be a more appropriate place to post. Thanks in advance for your help. This is my first benz and thanks to this forum I've learned much about it. Let the mods begin!

I think your fiber connections going to the trunk are not connected, since your CD changer is probably in the glovebox, and you have no amp. To configure the connectors, you have to remove the left panel on the passenger side (right next to the console). All the fiber connections are under there. Its a 5 minute job. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, Mik! The left panel on the passenger side? Do you mean the panel beneath the center console?

The panel, that the red arrow is pointing at, but on the passenger side. Sorry, that's the only picture I have.

Thanks! Found a 90 degree connector down there which appears to go directly to the PSE. Should I have found anything else? I am assuming now that since my car doesn't have TeleAid or Bose that the fiber ring sits between the Head Unit and the CD changer. Is that correct?

Yes the phone module is between CD-changer and head unit. The ring goes:

HEAD UNIT --> CD-CHANGER --> PHONE --> HEAD UNIT

Did you download your bulletin from Paul's site?

6310i is working! Wow. Works great. If you're installing one yourself, don't forget that on some w203 models (like mine), MB did not install the phone fuses. I played around with the fiber optics for a few hours, unable to get the loop closed and the electronics working before steve helped me out with the fuse thing. You'll need two fuses (#13 and 16, I think...7.5 amp and 5 amp ATC type, respectively). Thanks to everyone on this forum for the help. If anyone needs some assistance with the phone install, it's all pretty fresh in my head so email me.

Next up, voice control.....

Hey thanks for the offer. I didn't even see your reply to this thread until I'd already found a VCM on ebay, purchased, received and installed it. Now I'm trying to use it and could really benefit from a manual of some sort. If you've got one of those I'd love to buy it! Thanks!

Just pull lever back and say, "Help"

You will get all the instruction that a manual would give you.

I don't have the manual, sorry!

I am doing the same, except for a V60 phone. I can't find the fuse connector to the side of the dash, fuse #40.

Check out https://mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=89387
maybe you can help me.
Thanks
