Command / Audio Upgrades Demystified

Whilst researching an upgrade the the command system and finding more grief than anything helpful, I finally came accross this fellow in the links below who's an expert on the upgrades. He's produced a number of excellent youtube videos that carefully explain what to buy, what to avoid, and all the differences between android units and the big brands. It clarified everything for me and his top 3 brands video in particular was very helpful. Certainly worth viewing if you're going down this path.

Thanks for the links and the info! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for as there seems to be a lack of information out there in the forums. It makes me feel much better about swapping out the factory head unit with an aftermarket one, and helps with what brands are decent.

Die to the videos, I’m about to but one of the head units, probably the Teyes, but we’ll see.

I’ll try to remember to post results here once we get something and install it.

Good to hear. I bought the T'eyes unit after much research. It seemed to have the best quality hardware and the software also looks like its miles ahead of anything else. Its for a different vehicle for my daughter and expect it to arrive in the next few days. I added a reverse camera and dashcam. If you buy one, Id be interested to see if it works with the factory reverse camera. Ive read elsewhere that even though they say you need to use their camera, that it worked with a factory camera on a Jeep. Hopefully it lives up to the hype.

I don’t have a factory reverse camera in my car and my wife didn’t want to add one, though she did opt for the forward facing camera. We’ll see how long it takes to get here, but the price of the unit was excellent, especially compared to the well known brands and for what you get. I also like the fact that the Chinese units don’t have to mirror your phone, unlike the well known brands, but we’ll see.

If this unit works well, I just might buy one for my BMW which currently has an Alpine unit that’s not very good.

I am wondering if Mercedes eventually decides to follow Porsche's example and sell audio upgrade for the 171 model. https://www.iclarified.com/88946/por...older-vehicles

I finished installing the Teyes unit in my daughters 2010 B180 and wow what an upgrade. There is some stuffing around to be done though, although its not that hard. Yell out if you get stuck

I finished installing the Teyes unit in my daughters 2010 B180 and wow what an upgrade. Its the base model so no sat nav, bluetooth music streaming or reverse camera. Now she has all that plus dashcam, internet connectivity and every app there is. Im thinking of getting one for my ML. There is some stuffing around to be done, although its not that hard. I tool my time over a few days and it all worked out very well. Yell out if you get stuck.

I’ve been trying to find info about the Teyes unit for my W204, but there is not much out there and I can’t get the manufacture to answer. Might be the coolest unit, but their support seems to bite. Just trying to find out stuff like will my factory CD player work, command knob, does it have a factory screen mode?

I got the top of the line Teyes unit, however it didn’t work with my W211. In the product description, it shows the back and circles the connection points stating that if it has that style, then “PG” will not work. It took a couple of weeks to hear back from them about that, and even then it didn’t clear anything up. Well, when I got the unit, “PG” stands for “power and ground” meaning that the small style connector is not compatible with their unit, only the large style slide connector that has individual wires, so I’m guessing units without Navigation and/or factory aux. jack.

I ended up getting a full refund from the company I bought it from, located in Australia. They worked with me to try and get the unit operational in my car, but that would have required a lot of cutting/splicing/modifying that I didn’t want to do.

The issue actually ended up being my amplifier, which I got repaired by a place on eBay. Their customer service was fantastic and the system has been working flawlessly for the past 5 months. While the system doesn’t have all of the fancy gadgets newer systems have, it does have the factory Aux input, so everything just goes through the phone and since I have the factory Bluetooth puck, I have that for my phone, plus ACTUAL buttons!

I’m slightly disappointed that the Teyes unit wasn’t compatible, but I didn’t have to spend $1,000+ on a new unit and then the possible headache of getting it working.
