Newer design? Newer meaning purchased more recently? You don't qualify your statements, which leaves them open to interpretation.

You may be a little hot!
I just did the opposite. I replaced my bose amp with Soundstream Amps and changed the speakers. My amps have 5 volt balanced inputs that I connected to directly to the factory head unit. The problem here is that you have a different type of output on the Kenwood than the Bose amp has input. Differential (Bose) versus unbalanced (Kenwood) Believe it or not, the factory systems architecture is very good, they just use HORRIBLE speakers and a marginal amp.
