I found this out accidently, (maybe it says this in the manual) but after opening the hood and it stops at is predetermined raise point, you can continue to raise the hood to almost a 90 degree angle. I guess that is for if Merc needs to pull out the engine. I know my BMW didn't do that.

Yup, all Mercedes can do this. It is for servicing the motor. In some models, there are locks that has to be released before it can reach the servicing point
