Any difference in using normal diesel and premium diesel?

I'm currently using Caltex premium diesel.

What are you guys using? (:

Good question !!!

I've got a close friend of mine who swears by it and uses it all the time in both his truck and his new BMW 118d, that's here in Australia BTW.

I gave it a try once (2 tank fulls) back to back and noticed no difference at all other than a different exhaust smell compared to the Shell diesel I always use.

From what I know the Caltex is supposed to have cleaner additives but I don't know if there's any advantage to it.

In Europe I believe they have different grades of diesels just like the different petrols with different octane ratings, but not the case here in Australia, it's only the one type.

Wish they had more types as you could use the one that's best suited, just like petrol where in one of my other cars I use 98ron and just stick to the normal 92ron in the others.

When I used to have a 220 CDI I filled the tank with OMV premium diesel only. There was definitely a difference I could feel between the premium and regular diesel and there was a slight drop in the fuel consumption.
