2012 C350 Coupe
New C350 owner: this CANNOT be normal behaviour?!? (anyone?)

Hi all, just purchased a 2012 C350 Coupe and this is my first post on the board...

I've been loving the vehicle overall and still getting used to it, but thought I'd ask about one thing before I head back to the dealer:

I am able to shift my Auto transmission from D to N to R and to P WITHOUT having to hit the brake pedal!?! Now I've only attempted this while the car was idling for obvious reasons, but I feel this should still not be possible (other than into neutral)??

I can only imagine what would happen to my transmission should I accidentally hit it into reverse while on the highway in this case!

Gonna bring it in to have that checked out unless others are aware of this as feature (for what?).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Kamy

AFAIK with any auto transmission from any brand the above is what will happen and with some vehicle types you will be able to move from D to N whilst driving, but definitely not into R whilst on the move

Thanks for the reply... I guess I've been driving manual transmissions for so long that I can't remember this behaviour in an auto!!

But just for argument's sake, are you saying your own coupe allows this while the motor is idling and the car is not moving? You've tried this yourself?

Hello again

TBH I havn't tried it in my C Coupe, I have a habbit of always depressing the brake even whilst stationary and then selecting gears when in an auto vehicle however I do have 2 other auto trans vehicles and with those when in a hurry do sometimes select D or R without application of the brake pedal and whilst idling and stationary.

I'll give it a try in the Coupe to verify and get back to you on that one, mechanically speaking as long as the vehicle is stationary it certainly won't hurt it in any way but for safety it's good practice to always have the brakes applied when selecting gears when stationary
