Pumping Noise from the back right side
1995 C280
I hear a constant pumping noise from the right back side of the car. Opened the trunk and removed the wall cover and the noise seems to be from a pump looking think with a few hoses connected to it. It sounds like a fan motor turning on and off every 5 seconds none stop. Does anyone know what this is?

That is the vacuum pump. This pump controls the central locking system. It should only activate when you are unlocking or locking the doors. If there is a leak in the system... it will run for 5 or so seconds, and then time out.
If it's running constantly every 5 seconds... then I'd wonder what is up. Please be more specific with the symptoms! Thanks and good luck!

The vacuum pump is located behind the trunk liner (in the trunk...!) on the passenger side. Looks like this:

Mine would run for 5 or so seconds longer than normal (1-2) seconds when unlocking the doors... it turned out to be a leaky door actuator. I could hear the air escaping from the rear door upon unlocking, in congruence with the vacuum pump running.
Good luck!

Hey,
Thanks for your response. Since we're hearing sounds from the pump, does it need to be replaced?
I think we had it replaced two years ago when my rear defroster stopped working. The dealer replaced free of charge, even though my C went off warranty a month before. Otherwise, it was a $1000 part. But I may be mistaken for which part was replaced...

P.S. I posted this board in the Tech Talk forum too.

I highly doubt that the problem lies within the pump itself. There is (more than likely) a vacuum leak or an electrical glitch of some sort.
Can you be more specific? Any patterns?
