Intermittment ABS light

our 95 C220 with 47.3K, is having an issue with the abs sensor light. It comes on and goes off intermittently, it never stays lit up. sometimes, it
barely lights up and then goes off. I do not believe this car has had
brake work done on it. I plan on taking it to an independant mechanic.
What should I be on the lookout for? pads, rotors, sensors?

symptoms clarification

the light comes on and pulsates during braking. It goes off when the
pedal is released.

If its the sensor built in to the brake pad then it would make sense. When I needed new pads it would flicker a lot whenever I had my foot on the brake.
