1998 c280 sport
Hi all,
I have a 1998 c280 sport. its been good to me untill recently. the car would shut off for no reason while driving, and sometimes would not start after driving for a while. I did a search and read that it could be the crank sensor. I checked that. Also i read that it could be a voltage regulator, but that is 97 and before, and i have a 98.
I dont belive its caused by the car being hot because if i drive it for a while, let it sit, even when the engine is cold, it would not start. If i left it for a few hours, then it would start again.
So i was checking wires and i saw that a few of the ground wires in the trunk area were melted. I took those apart and replaced it with new wiring. i also checked all the wiring thruought the whole car. even behind the dash ect.
While doing this, i had the car battery unplugged for about 2 weeks. I put everything back to normal and now the car will not recognize my key. but its strange, when i put power to the ignition, sometimes i can lock and unlock the car with the key remote, but sometimes i cannot.
The ignition will NOT recognize my key. normally, the ignition would lock the key in place when it recognizes it. It does not even do that.
I checked all the relays in the 2 front fuse boxes, the one next to the fuse box in the trunk of the car, and the one under the big plastic cover in the trunk.
Im a pretty good mechanic and ive owned and worked on my mercedes since it was new. I just dont know anything about mercedes electronics.
If you guys have any ideas, i would appreciate it. I cannot even start my car to move it out of the garage. please advise
