I change my oil every 5k and run fully synthetic. I always use a bottle of techron @ every oil change, in addition to Chevron fuel (91 octane). Basically, my car performs flawlessly. I know have 125,000 miles on her.
According to the manufacturer, a 1995 C280 will get 20mpg in city driving, and 26 on the hwy.
Considering I drive about 1/2 hwy, and 1/2 city, I should average about [b]23mpg[b] (avg of 20 & 26).
However, I usually average around 19 mpg, combined driving. If I drive mostly in the city, I can get as low as 17 mpg. And if I'm on a road-trip, the most I've gotten was 24 mpg.
My fuel consumption is kind of a lot because I've got a lead foot. I really punch it quite a bit.
Though I think my consumption is still pretty damn good with the way I drive. If I'm in our 95 Tahoe (4 dr), and I push it a bit, it can get 7 or 8 mpg.
The fuel injection in these Benz's are so advanced!

1. try to remove unwanted items in your vehicle (books, Cds, jackets, shoes, back seat, spare tire, door panel, ......) these will add extra the weight to your vehicle which returns lower MPG.
2. do not use A/C and do not open any windows (even in hot summer weather), by doing both will result in 10% MPG penalty.
3. Accelerate very slowly, don't do a 0-60MPH run on every green light.
4. Do not carpool, additional passenger will also add up the weight of vehicle which equals to lower MPG.
5. Keep a constant speed (55mph - 65mph) on freeway. Don't change lane too often.
6. No sudden stop and go. Use the transmission as alternate method to reduce the speed.
7. Change your oil every 1500 miles, give your engine the smoothest running condition.
In conclusion:
By doing all of above will returns a better MPG (but no guarantee it will do better than what manufature claims), but WE WILL MISS ALL THE FUN of driving vehicle, so forget about all of these. Just enjoy your ride!
