Any Sporty Rims for a 97 C280 ?

Well I would like to purchase some sporty rims for my Black 97 C280. I dont want to have to round out the fenders. I would like some suggestions. I like the AMG II Mono blocks 17". I'am not sure if they would look ok. I dont see many C Classes with nice rims... Please advise

That was a shameless plug if I've ever seen one! I wouldn't mind a set of AMG rims for my C220.. but I mean, a C220 with AMG rims.. what an oxy moron.

I have a '94 C280 with AMG Monoblocks II in 17X7.5 et35 on 225/45-17's all around. Looks good. If you don't lower it, you won't have to flare the fenders.

Don't have any pics right now, but can e-mail you a few in the next few days (after I clean my car

I'm asking $950 for rims/tires. They are staggered (7.5 front, 8.5 rear). Even if you lower the car, you won't have to roll any fenders or do any other modifications. The C36/C43/CLK55 all use this exact setup.

I'm not a big fan of chrome, so i wouldn't go that way...but hey, it's up to you...

I say go 18 inch.. you can lower the car as well with out rolling the fender. And believe it or not there are some 19 inches (such as bbs) NOT ALL OF THEM.... that you can put on your car as well w/out rolling the fenders. Oh, and to the guy that was talking about a C220 with AMG wheels, umm if you remember correctly the C280 Sport (mine) came with AMG wheels on them, and its not a C36.. so whos the MORON NOW?

don't go over 17", by putting on 18" on your W202, it will look like a BIG FOOT. For a car of Civic size, 18" is too much. Just go for what manufature design for.

actually ill beg to differ. If you notice most of the big cars in CA... with the turbos etc.. (C class) have 19/20 inch and they rolled the Fenders. 17s are to small, you might as well catergorize your self with the hondas then. And if you do it right, and lower the car (which you can do w/out rolling fenders) on 18s.. it looks great... dont know what kind of cars you have been looking at - but the 18s are the best.

18"+ on w202 just shows others that you have too much money but don't know where to spend!

stick with 17" for W202, if 18" is so perfect for w202, why doesn't MB think about it on its C36 and C43? go with what original w202 design for, 17" will give you good handling by not compensate the ride quality and fuel economy.

for a car (w202) of Honda Civic's size, 18" is just too much for this size.

even though you are driving a w202, but actually, its size is similar to Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. will you put a set of 18" on these cars?

BIGGER WHEEL does not mean better handling and ride quality!

if you are a fan of BIG FOOT club, let's see a set 20"+ on your W202, i will personally admire your wealth and guts but not your ride! (don't forget after putting on the 20"+ wheels, a "double deck", "basket handle" type of whale wing should install on the trunk lid)

How about a set of all surface 22"+ 4WD SUV wheel/tire on w202, i bet this will get all the attention on the road (including COPS), and probally, your ride will be on the 10 best (don't know which category-BIG FOOT maybe) for next year car and driver magazine!

Alright! I heated debate on rims size!!

Listen..yes, you can go 18s on a W202 and you won't need to roll your fender, even after lowering. It's very important you get the right offset and size tires.

Whatever size you want to go with, it's up to you. Around the Northeast US, 18s is probably as large as I would go, esp if you drive every day. Even with 17s you're bound to dent a rim from time to time.

The 17" AMGs i have are actually quite heavy, compared to some other rims. But they have been known to be very strong as well. 17s will give you good handling w/o sacrificing too much power (if you put on bigger rims, you lose a little power to the ground). Also, ride quality might be a little stiffer, but that also depends a lot on your tire choice. However, in terms of looks, that's up to you. I personally would get 18s. But that's just me. =) I don't think 18s are too big...when I had them on my integra, they were definitely too big (the tires had to be thin, and after lowering they rubbed a bit, even with the correct offset).

Listen, it's everyone's personal taste what they like...if they want to spend the $ to get 18s, that's fine...i've seen 18" AMG monoblocks on many W202's, and they look great! Go to the benzsport galleries and you'll see some. It all depends on what they're looking for in a rim.

Agreed, and well said. Like I was saying if you look around, almost all of the modified W202's in the gallerys are all 18s or larger. I have seen 19s, and believe it or not they dont look that big. ONLY if the driver is stupid enough to leave the car raised. Any how, 18s are the biggest I would go as well, maybe 19 if I had the BBS wheels I looked at. There is a guy here in Orlando that has them. NOW, speaking of big foot, how tacky is it to have a 17 inch wheel, with your car lowered and still have 45/50 series tires on it? LOL..... on a S CLASS maybe, on a C class (The other end of the spectrum) it looks ugly as hell... But again I think it was well stated when he said its "preference." Lets face it, our cars are not super cars w/out 20,000 in work to make them quick, so ill sacragice what "little power" i get now, to have good looks. God know im not going anywhere quick, thats why I have a 98 Z28.. with 17x10 on the rear, and 17x8.5 on the front.... but then again i have 315/40 r17s =) Ciao!

The roads where you live matter. 18 and 19 inch wheels on a W202 in NYC will be killed-in-action. Roads are better is CA and Florida. Personnally, I would not go any bigger than what is on the AMG version. AMG knows best!

yes, AMG knows best for the car. and actually w202 is not design for the 18"+ wheel installed.

the purpose for getting plus size wheel is try to lower the vehicle's center gravity to gain better handling and traction without discomfort to the passenger. w202 is not design to be a sports car, it is classified as a family sedan per MB. AMG C36 and C43 is just a sporty version for the c class and inside it is still a family sedan.

if you want to have the look only and don't care about the ride quality and hidden dangerous by installing 18"+ wheel, go ahead and do it. or maybe 22"+ for w202 without the tires will even make the cars look better.

for your information: following is the dimension for 94-00 w202

94-00 w202 : L (177.4 in ) x W (67.7 in) x H (56.1 in)
2003 Corolla : L (178.3 in) x W (66.9 in) x H (57.7 in)

just let you know w202 is the size of Corolla, is a very small car (sub-compact) per EPA standard!

do you think 18" on Corolla looks good? see for yourself!
good day.

Thumbs up On da Rims

Great info. from all. I would have to take in consideration the area where I live which is NY (the pothole capitol) lol 17" inch rims seem very well up my alley. I mosty see AMG's on the C class. Have any one seen any other nice looking rim by brand name on the C class ? Dont want to put a cheezy looking rim on a Benz...lol

Shorter springs are used to lower the vehicles center of gravity.

Doing a Plus-1, Plus-2, or Plus-3 tire/wheel upgrade does not lower the car it only lowers the tire sidewalls while the tire and cars height remains constant. A proper Plus-upgrade increases the rim size and the tire height is 'supposed' to remain close to the height of the OEM tire.

FROM THE TIRERACK WEBSITE: The Plus One Concept Defined:

"By using a larger diameter wheel with a lower profile tire you will improve both the performance and appearance of your vehicle. The visual appeal is obvious. Most wheels look better than the sidewall of a tire, so the more wheel and less sidewall that shows, the better your vehicle looks. Some performance improvements of a shorter sidewall include quicker steering response and better lateral stability."

yes u are right on the center gravity issue.

TIRERACK is a online tire/wheel and accessories retailer, of course they have to say something nice for buyer to purchase plus size wheel/tire package! otherwise how are they going to keep doing business on the net?

back in 98 when I replaced my wheel to AMG 17", I have asked TIRERACK's opinion in up sizing to 18", but TIRERACK did not recommend to have 18" installed on w202 for safety reason.

i have checked their website recently and found 18" is OK to install on w202. I don't know what make them changed their mind. but one thing for sure is if they don't recommend 18", people will not buy these 18" from them, they will lose lots of money making opportunity.

I think is all business. do TIRERACK know more than AMG or MB, I don't think so. They just want to move the inventory out of their warehouse as fast as possible.

TIRERACK's information can only be used as reference.

E55... there is only one problem, i dont know if most people are aware of though. You say "amg" knows best (I am not being rude here) just so you know my tone... =) But recently AMG (Mercedes) went to a different wheel manufacture out of tawian, or japan.. I dont recall.. any how the wheels were made of much cheaper quality. Lots of these cars (especially) here in Florida have been returned (with wheels flaking, and peeling, and bending) quite easily... so as far as the older cars I agree.. the newer ones.. I would watch out for.. just a word to the wise.. its a big issue here in MB of Orlando!

Damon! =)
