Extra fan...good/bad?

Extra fan...good/bad?
hi guys
i drive a late 1997 C230. As i noticed at first my car doesn't have 2 factory-fitted extra fans like in the earlier models. My car has 1 additional extra fan in front of the radiator and i'm pretty sure that it's aftermarket. According to my dealer, the fan consumes more electricity which results in the decrease in performance. To be honest, i havent felt any significant difference either in performance or fuel consumption. The size of the extra fan is around 30cm in diameter and it has 11 blades. not sure abt the wattage tho.
my question is, is it true that the fan reduces the performance of the car and worsen the fuel consumption?
