Good advice needed; C280 A/C compressor ceased

The A/C compressor ceased on my 1998 C280 Sport. It has 168,000 miles on it. The other day upon accelerating from a stop light, I heard an ugly noise, and smelled something burning. After opening the hood I saw some smoke coming from the driver's side of the motor, so I had it towed to a reputible dealer around here.

I do not need the A/C at all. As far as I am concerned, I would rather not pay the $1,600 to get it fixed. The dealer said the car is drivable as is.

But I'm wondering, is there any chance of furthering damaging the vehicle because this A/C compressor [is] ceased? Is it used in any other aspect of the engine's normal operation?

Thank you

You should be fine as long as the a/c pulley is still spinning freely and not causing the belt to slip.
