W202 5 Speed Auto Transmission issue
I have experienced a kick from transmission when I accelerate, usually at the 1st gear. It felt like someone hitting you from behind. It also happen when the car is slowing down and needs to pick up the speed quickly by steping on the gas pedal instantly. Maybe it is rough shifting, but anyone knows the actual cause of this problem?
any help is appreciated!

Super3day,
No resoution but, I have the same sort of problem. Shifting is rough out of 1st and 2nd really. Kick in the back describes it well. I've noticed that if I lift my foot off the accelerator at the time the tranny is going to shift it isn't as bad. So I still don't know. It's happened so bad at times that there was a pretty audible thump.. don't know if that's the drive shaft or what. I've replaced the front flex disc already to fix a problem with a vibration I had. Didn't seem to make a difference on this problem.

will this leads to a big problem in transmission in the future? or a re-build on the transmission is needed?
It does not happen often, but when I felt the kick, it just worries me that it will cost me big bucks on repair.

I've experienced the same problem with my '00 C230K. I've taken it to the dealer to have them check it out, but you know what happens when you're trying to show someone something...the problem you have never occurs when you're having someone inspect it; only happens to you at certain times. I hope it doesnt lead to a transmission problem, because my car only has 5000 miles left till the warranty is over, and I'm comtemplating trading my car in because I haven't heard the greatest reports about the Kompressor motor on the C230s...what do you guys think?

Well, if this economy doesn't right itself soon then I'll be driving my C230k for another 2 years or so before I can upgrade. Seriously though, I am expecting right up to 100k miles before I need to worry about the engine or drivetrain. Normal wear and tear I can handle, but don't tell me that my Kompressor is going to blow up anytime soon! That is not in the plans!

Mine has been doing it for about 30,000 miles or so, so I don't think it's a serious problem.
Though I wish somebody has had the problem and knows how to fix it. Amen on the Economy comment.. if it doesn't harden up soon I'll be forced to go Jap or something.

I have a friend he has a 98 C230 also experienced "Kick from behind" problem. He said his transmission does not have the "stick-shift" function, so he manually shift down from D-4-3 if needed to speed up quickly during highway speed (35mph-55mph). does this hurt transmission at all? He told me auto transmission was designed to capable doing manual shifting from D-4-3..., so it should be OK, and the "Stick-Shift" function on new model's auto transmission is doing the same thing istead of shift "+" and "-". what do you guys think?

I think it might be a symptom of the Kompressor on my car. I've never driven a supercharged car before, so I'm assuming that its normal for a Kompressed engine to act that way, considering its pumping much more air into the engine then any other normal engine...but my car has been doing it for a while, and not necessarily so often, but it hasn't shown any signs of failure or malfunctioning, so I'm assuming that its normal, unless anyone can inform me otherwise?

I have a 1997 C280 with that 5 speed tranny and 70.000 miles on the car and for like 10.000 miles my tranny does the same things plus when it down shifts from 1 to 2nd i feel something from under the car. People from dealer were telling me that its the valve body because i have the first 5 speed tranny that there was andin 1998 they upgraded the valve body and computer (tranny) but now i see that 1998 and up have problems too. Good because i was abaut to give the car t the dealer to change the valve body but now i dont know what to think.

Valve body, huh? Why do the think the symptoms would be caused by this? Never thought about that being a possibility with the hard shifting in my car.

I have driven my friend's 96 C220 with 4-speed auto, it feels much stronger and responded quickly than the 97 5-speed. My 5-speed is slow respond tranny and soemtimes has trouble hunting for the right gear especially when engine rpm is around 2500-3000. I wish the 98's has improved a lot accroding to that dealership that someone mentioned. if it does, I can have the parts replaced with 98's parts and hope this will solve the problems. any suggestion? anyone with 98 C230 5Speed please leave your comments or experience. thanks!

Another mistery with my trrany over the weekend. I was driving about 20 mph and out of nowhere my tranny would not shift just stayd in 1st or 2nd gear i dont know what to do i called my friend in the MB dealer hes the mechanic over there , told him what happend and again he said it has to be something with the valve body. He also said that in 98 valve bodies were upgraded and also the transmision computer was upgraded. So i dont know guys what to do change the valve body (expensive)or wait untill it goes realy bad. OO when that thing happend with my tranny i shutoff the car and than started it again and it was ok till now .

I as well have felt the kick from behind in my 99c230k, but mine only happens from 1st to 2nd right after i warm up my car, thats all- i dont think it is a big deal at all. i figure it is because the kompressor hasnt warmed up fully yet and the air that is shot into the engine is really cold which in turn makes it kick, or it could be that your gears are grabbing really tight because the car just got warmed up and the gears are still stiff.

I went to the dearlership today, but they can't reproduce the syptoms that I have experienced. According to the dearlership, it might be the transmission fluids needs to be changed and also the fluids in the transmission is not warm enough so its kind of sticky and rough shifting after initial drive of the day. I thought dearlership always try to charge you lots of money once your car in their lots. but this time, they just let me go like that?
Anyway, I will replace the fluids today and see I can reproduce the problem again.
