Clean the faces of the block and cyl.head thoroughly, remove all traces of old gasket and sealant then clean with a solvent to remove any grease or oil.
The modern gaskets come with a fine bead of sealant already applied and should not have any added, do not allow any oil or grease onto the mating faces during assembly, not even the oils from your skin.
