next task: chewbacca sounds coming from car?

yes, sounds funny, and I might post this one in the general forums, but my car, for quite a while now, probably a year, has been giving out a noise of what seems to sound like chewbacca when i make turns at low speed. I have been living with it, but I really wouldn't mind finding out what the problem is. Has anyone else come across this problem before? like I said, steering @ low speeds 5-20mph (U-turn for example).

thanks,
-stevo

Hi Stevo...just got back from my local garage with a similar sort of noise..I took it there for them to have a listen...decided to put a new belt on then maybe look a bit deeper into the tensioner which is where the noise seams to be coming from.....booked in later this week..will keep you informed..

poss dumb question, but ya never know...have you checked the power strg fluid level...not 2 give u more pain, could poss b your power strng pump gone bad or failing if the fluid is good, but i betcha its low and starving, allowing air into the system...if ya keep doing it, it will ovrheat & eventually fail anyway!!!

Your car probably has either incorrect (not MB approved), insufficient, or simply expired power steering fluid.

update...replaced the drive belt...sound is now 75% better but I can still get it to do it a full lock...it appears to be a tight spot on the tensioner...might have a go and remove the tensioner myself, clean lubricate and replace, see if that sorts it...
