You can drive without but you must know that there is no system to assist You in dangerous situation
I've got this problem with my estate 200 T CDI and it maybe few possible problems: stop sensor below stop pedal and as in my own situation it was sensor of crosswise accelerarion and its located under boot floor (there is sensor with piezoelectronic microchip which detect possible side slideing, just go and check on computer it's shouldn't cost much (in poland c.a 100 zł it's about 30$) and this pedal sensor c.a 15 $ the second one is about 120 $ (for poland)

Maxell gave you good information. It could also be something even more simple. If your battery is going bad, it can also trigger the light because the computer senses that there might not be enough stable power to perform these functions. Borrow a free code scanner from the parts store to check for codes and also ask them to do a free battery check (at least they do this for free at most US chain-type auto stores). That should give you the information you need.
