EGR Flow Malfunction, Bad Idle, and Shutting Off 98 c230
Hey,
I have a 1998 c230 with 228k. Recently, I failed emission with the fault code p0400 EGR Flow Malfunction. MIL On= Fail MIL command status = Fail
I am having trouble with my idle as well. It might be a result of this but I am not exactly sure what it means. My car is fine when it is coasting 60-80mph.....But, if i am stopped, at a light and such, my car will start to shake, rumble and shut off. I do not think its fuel pump related or I wouldnt be able to drive it at speed, correct? I did have my fuel relay recently replaced and the car was fine for about a month.
It will run fine for a minute or two at a stop if I restart the car but then its BRuum Brumm mm Brmm Brmmm, drops to below 500 RPM and dies...sometimes it doesnt do it but Ill give it gas in neutral to make sure it doesnt happen? It makes me feel as tho its choking itself out, but I am not an expert and maybe something isnt firing correctly....its been a while since Ive changed spark plugs and nothing has ever really been replaced on the car....this is my first big problem (more or less)...shes my girl
could egr malfunction be the cause? and how much does this cost to fix? I am currently short of money and a recent college grad and I really need to plan my life for the next few months. Any advice or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

check all
lines and hoses going to the egr valve. If you have a mechanical valve it can be cleaned ,if electric the egr tube can be cleaned.
go to
www.everythingbenz.com
a forum members web site and search egr valve cleaning.
Good luck.
if a vacuum line is leaking or off it will give you the symptoms you stated.
You failed automatically just because the check engine light was on.

Hi I'm having the same problem code p0401. My 98 c230 runs rough at low speeds or at a stop while on D. I have also received a code p0302 misfire cy 2 for the first time. I have just changed my spark plugs for the first time 2 days prior to the CE light. These codes occurred together the same time after checking on my spark plug 2 because the boot protector was replaced and wanted to make sure that is was not stuck on the spark plug like the old one did. The spark plugs were changed from the BOSCH to NGK Platinums. I may have unclamped the FAM from the air filter box about 2 or 3 mm and replaced the front side EGR linking vacuum hose which was already broken into 4 little segment which were joint together by rubber hoses and replaced them with a 4'' plastiic straw from a spray bottle. Any advice is greatfull.
