what is the tranny PILOT BUSHING?

hey i have a 2000 c230 kompressor with about 60,000 miles. i recently replaced the fluid and tranny filter and after about 3,000 miles now i am noticing a small leak. so, i got under it and realized what was leaking and called the dealer and they said it was a common problem called the "pilot bushing" (front passenger side of the pan, just above the pan, has wires going into it and it is round). they said it was a cheap part. i need 2 things things : first - is that the official name of it cause i am having trouble finding that item online. second - has anyone ever changed this themselves? i would like to do it myself and save over $100 but i need some advice or pictures or something from someone on here. any help would be great.

I don't know what they're talking about but a transmission pilot bushing is a small bearing or babbit sitting in a recess in the back of the crankshaft where the input (pilot) shaft of the transmission fits.

Its purpose is to locate the pilot shaft and give it support to prevent wobbling or vibration, yet must allow the pilot shaft to spin freely from the crank when the clutch is depressed.

Most modern cars use an actual ball or roller bearing instead of the older bronze bushing.

It does not sound like they are describing a pilot bushing. A pilot bushing or bearing will not leak and won't have wires going to it.

Is this a manual-shift transmission or automatic?

Sounds more like the electrical connector for the transmission harness that runs up to the transmission ECU under the passenger footwell. A common leak. The fluid will wick up the harness and into the tranny ECU and destroy it, so fix this. Search the archives over at club202.com and the SLK230 forum at benzworld.
