MERCEDES C180
Strong knocking (Pinging)

Hi everybody, I am the owner of a C180 Auto year 2000 model. I leave in Pretoria/South Africa at an elevation of 1700 meters and 35°C. As the W202 engine warms up, it starts knocking (pinging) very badly between 1500 rpm and 3500 rpm, depending on the torque of course. The fuel used is 95 octane unleaded . I changed the Airmass, and 02 sensors. The fault analizer shows now a problem with "fuel trimming bank1" .
Another strange symptom is that when I start the engine in the morning, it takes a very long time to get braking assistance..usually I need to give some power before I feel the assistance.
When I stand still in traffic jam (yes, we also have these sorts things down in Africa), sometimes the engine starts running rough an stops after a while. I also loose brake assistance while the engine runs rough.
Very often, the hot starts are quite difficult. the engine would start, rev up and then die.
Voila... is there any help out there? Thanks in advance

Have you checked for an engine related vacuum leak?

Hi, thanks for reply. I did search for a possible leak, especially brakes vacuum. The knoking problem is intermitent and occurs mainly when the engine temperature is high.
I will check again. Thanks

yea my first thought would be a vacume leak around the intake, make sure no tubes have come off while tampering around in the engine bay or changing oil etc,
could also be a bad injector or blocked injector, change you fuel filter to be on the safe side, its reccomended to do that anyway
