C220 Timing Chain snapped....

My 1995 C220 (150K miles) has fallen victim to a failed timing chain. It had been making a light tapping sound in the front engine cover which would increase/decrease with revs. Recently the sound was getting louder and I knew I would have to address it. Unfortunately, it failed a few days ago while idling at a red light. Tach was at 500rpm when it suddenly shut off.

I've read that the M111 is an interference type engine which implies serious damage when the chain fails. Is there any chance the valves and or pistons survived unscathed given the very low revs? Is there any way to check for damge without removing the head? I've already removed the valve cover to confirm the failed chain.

I'd truly appreciate any help with this....

Thanks!

I never knew that chain would go bad. All I know is that they make noise but never had a chance to actually see them break. I just hope yours didn't do any damage on the engine.

Sorry to hear about your timing chain...
If it is true that the M111 is an interference type engine, then it doesn't matter if the chain broke at low or high RPMs, the valves will still hit the pistons.
You will have to remove the heads to confirm what damage has occured.

If it is making noise, it needs to be addressed.
